Summary
The key to this renovation lies in the re-conception of the circulation system. It forms a new spine for the building that connects the historic rooms and offers a marvellous view of the landscape. The intention is to allow the various rooms in the building to be used independently of each other: weddings on the first floor, exhibitions on the second or concerts beneath the roof. Light entering through a rooflight penetrates downward through a gap between two lift shafts. The staircase winds upwards in various geometries. The bush-hammered exposed concrete relates to the sandstone external wall that has been freed from plaster. The powerful local community, which owns the castle, commissioned the design of the new exhibition directly. Conceived with groups of young visitors in mind the interactive stages of this exhibition (with somewhat limited content) present the building, its siege, destruction, reconstruction, and the uses of the castle. The history reveals several interesting facets, for instance that the Polish National Museum was housed here between 1870 and 1927.
