Summary
Museums are like hermetically and climatically sealed safes but today they must also function as event locations and educational machines. In addition to an extension to the exhibition space these new demands have also led to fundamental renovation of the existing building and of the building services, the security technology and the fire precaution measures. The focussed use of colour gives the institution a fresh appearance. In this regard the reflective canopy roof and the self-assured lettering of the institution also contribute. Today the tall foyer allows views inside the curatorial office on the upper floor. This opens the museum, as do the better views through and out of the building, offered, for instance, by a new window facing the residential district. The re-used facade of the extension comes from a demolished 1970s school building and is itself a museum piece. Along with bright orange and the shades of blue this rust brown colour reoccurs in the inviting foyer furniture and in the cloakrooms, helping to connect old and new.
Jenny Keller (1980) is an architect and journalist. She was an editor at this magazine from 2019 to 2024 and has since been working as a project manager for building culture at Swiss Heritage Society.
