Summary
The storage of art collections has given rise to a new type of museum. Spectacular architectural icons have also been created, such as the Laurenz Foundation in Basel (H&deM 2003) and the Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam (MVRDV 2021). The Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London does not need this. Its sensational experience awaits inside an ordinary warehouse. In the Storehouse, visitors are free to roam the floors viewing displayed objects of their choice as a collective experience. The restoration workshops and the visitors themselves become exhibits. With striking effect and for better orientation, the New York architecture team have carved a three-storey airy atrium into the old warehouse. Whole building fragments are installed as exhibits around this hall. Looking into the depths of the Storehouse, thousands of exhibits catch the eye. You feel like you are in a massive film studio full of props or in the largest sweet shop of all time.
Rosamund Diamond has been running the Diamond Architects office in London since 1991. She is a correspondent for werk, bauen + wohnen in the British capital.
