Summary

Encased in a facade of prefabricated concrete frames, the hybrid extension to the tram depot connects to the existing listed building that dates from 1911. The exterior offers little indication of the colourful mix of functions inside: the extension to the depot and maintenance hall is housed in the long plinth, flanked on either side by the commercial spaces, workspaces and meeting rooms of the VBZ and by studio apartments. On the flat roof of the tram shed there is a courtyard with a play area, seating and trees grouped in islands, bordered by two-story row houses. On either side of this courtyard a residential tower block soars upwards. The project was a tour de force in terms of planning, financing and typology. The great demand for the 197 apartments confirms the urgent need. However, the tram depot provides even more: it shows that infrastructure does not have to be a blind spot on the urban map but can make an active contribution to a lively environment that is an agreeable place to live.
