Summary
The exhibition space known as the “Werkstückhalle” (workpiece hall) shows that even in the context of net zero goals for building construction concrete and steel remain relevant. However, it is decisive that they be used in an optimised and focussed way and intelligently combined with regenerative materials. Durability, dismantlability and reusability are the most important qualities. Four mock-ups at a scale of 1:1 show possible applications and the spatial potential they offer. Three apartment buildings in Birsfelden by Graser -Troxler Architekten combine delicate wooden ceiling slabs with concrete and single layer brickwork walls in a way that opens up the view. The high-rise building by Pool on Freihofstrasse in Zurich still uses reinforced concrete but in an optimised form. The multi-storey H1 in Regensdorf by Boltshauser Architekten works with a frame of beech ribs that is exposed internally. Approaches to research are also shown: the Stahlkammer -hybrid construction system aims to establish the use of steel with clay in housing construction.
