Summary
The present-day agglomeration of Effretikon developed during the boom era of the 1960s out of three hamlets close to Illnau-Effretikon train station. The search for a centre is as old as this development itself. The Effi-Märt erected at the beginning of the 1970s is a multi-purpose complex with shopping arcades, apartments, an old person’s centre, and a marketplace, which, for a while, became a popular meeting place. The current plans for a centre originated in 2008 when Mittim, an over-dimensioned investors project, offered new hope but also awakened mistrust. In the course of re-working this project, Staufer & Hasler developed a master plan that envisages an increase in density and an upgrade along Bahnhofstrasse. The first project to be completed in 2025 was Bellis, a residential and commercial building opposite the train station. Further apartment houses, high-rise buildings, and the municipal bus station will follow in the next few years.
